– Due to the declining economy, Valley Transit Authority will
hold meetings to discuss proposed transit service reductions. If
approved, the transit service reductions would go into effect in
April 2003. For Gilroy, there will be two meetings on Tuesday, Dec.

Youth Basketball League

GILROY – The Gilroy Community Services Department is offering a competitive basketball league for boys and girls in grades three to 10. Divisions will be decided by the number of enrollment. The deadline for registration is Monday, Dec. 2 at Gilroy City Hall, and try-outs will be held on Dec. 7 for coaches to view players before the draft. The season starts Jan. 4. Details: 846-0460.

Holiday Decorating Contest

GILROY – The South County Realtors Association and the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce present the Holiday Home Decorating Contest 2002. A panel of judges will tour the city on Wednesday, Dec. 11 between 6 and 10 p.m. The prize for first place is $75, with $50 and $25 for second and third place, and a special $25 prize for the best apartment or condominium. All residences within the Gilroy City limits are eligible. Decorations must be visible from the street. The deadline for entry is Dec. 9. All entrants will be publicized in The Dispatch. Food For Families

GILROY – Customers at Raley’s family of stores can help feed a neighboring family while shopping for their own meals. Food For Families, the nonprofit program that gives food banks a chance to fill their pantry needs, is seeking non-perishable food and cash donations. Now through Jan. 3, Food For Families donation bins can be found at 132 Raley’s, Nob Hill Foods and Food Source locations throughout California, New Mexico and Northern Nevada, including the Nob Hill location on First Street in Gilroy. Community blood drive

Gilroy Veterans Photo Display

GILROY – The fifth annual veteran’s photo display is being planned for this November and December at Gilroy City Hall. This is an opportunity to recognize those Gilroy citizens who have served in the military. One photo of each veteran (living or deceased) taken in uniform during his or her military service will be displayed with a name and brief description of the individual’s service. The exhibit, located in the main hallway at City Hall, will be open to the public from Nov. 4 to Dec. 27 during normal business hours. If you would like to participate, pick up an entry form at the Community Services counter at City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Each photo submitted will be carefully handled, copied, and the original returned. South Valley Youth Orchestra Concert

GILROY – The South Valley Youth Orchestra will perform a free community concert Monday, Dec. 2 in the Gilroy High School Theater at 7 p.m. The orchestra features youth from Gilroy, Morgan Hill and surrounding communities. Some travel from San Jose or Hollister for the opportunity to learn and perform with the orchestra under the direction of Vincent Gomez. Gomez has conducted the Santa Cruz Youth Symphony and the Youth Orchestra of Monterey County. He is currently a music adjudicator and is Artist in Residence at Lincoln High School (San Jose’s performing arts magnet). The Dec. 2 performance will include several short pieces from the classical repertoire. Auditions will be conducted in January.
