GILROY – Rehearsals for musicians of the South Valley Symphony will commence on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in room AL 101, located on the Gavilan College campus. Music Director and Conductor Henry Mollicone will be returning for his fourth season.
The orchestra is in need of violin, viola and cellists in the string section. There is also a need for at least two contrabass players for the volunteer orchestra.
There is also a need for bassoon, trombone and French horn players as well as a percussion player.
Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m., and college credits will be given to those who attend the majority of rehearsals and perform in the concerts during the fall and spring semesters.
This year marks the 30th season of the continuous operation for the orchestra. The opening concert is set for Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Gavilan College theater. Concert starting times this season have been moved up one half-hour to 7:30 p.m.

Wish upon a star
MORGAN HILL – Visit Henry Coe State Park on Saturday, Aug. 16, for a Discovery Hike at 10 a.m. Participants will chose the path with Libby Vincent. Bring lunch and lots of water. Stick around for the evening program, “The Night Sky” at 8 p.m. Greg Scott, your celestial guide, will guide you through the mysteries of the constellations. Honoring health care workers
GILROY – Bethany Community Church will be hosting a “Healthcare Recognition Day” on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m. They will be honoring healthcare professionals and learning about benefits available in medical situations. The church is located at 8095 Kelton Drive. Gilroy. Details: 842-9445.
