Program aids first-year students

Gilroy – The Gavilan College student services department will host a free program for first-year college students that emphasizes the value of academics, time management, setting goals and maximizing opportunities in college and in the professional arena.

The presentation dubbed “The Ultimate Road Trip: Campus 2 Career,” will be staged on Wednesday at 11:20am at Gavilan College in the theater. Gavilan College is located at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

The same presentation will be delivered to more than 350,000 students on campuses across the nation this fall.

“Currently, only 75 percent of college freshmen progress to their sophomore year,” said, JR Cifani, vice president of Making it Count. “We are providing students with a map to realize their goals and ambitions.”

n Thursday is Supply Schools with Supplies Day; bring supplies to city hall at either city.

n Friday is Second Sight Day – donate old eyeglasses at either city hall.

n Saturday is Keep Your Gear in Play Day, a great time to donate all sorts of sports equipment to either city hall for redistribution.

Free movie night in downtown Gilroy

Gilroy – Bring your chairs and your popcorn bowl and join us downtown movie nights.

The movies start at 7pm and will be shown in the parking lot of Eigleberry Street between Fourth and Fifth streets.

Symphony kicks off season

Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will kick off their 33rd season opening concert on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 7:30pm at the Gavilan College Theater.

Maestro Anthony Quartuccio has announced his intention of featuring local talented musicians appearing as soloists with the orchestra in this year’s series of concerts.

The opening concert will feature Greg Chambers performing the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra by Alexander Glazunov and Matt Thornton performing Weber’s Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra.

AARP safe driving class

Morgan Hill – The nations first and largest classroom refresher course for motorists 50 and older. Participants will familiarize themselves with driver safety and new laws. Three-year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on your own auto insurance, upon completion of this one-day program.

No tests – course, class materials, and instructor are provided by AARP. There is a minimal DMV certificate fee.
