Lady Mustang hoopsters pick up victories over Andrew Hill,
Carmel in Thursday double-header.
GILROY – In Thursday’s home game against Andrew Hill, the Gilroy High girls basketball team showed how good their team could be with heart, hustle, and determination.
The Lady Mustangs pounced on Andrew Hill early and often eventually outlasting them by the score of 70-56. Earlier in the day, Gilroy also beat Carmel 56-44 before taking on Andrew Hill to build its record to an impressive 5-1.
“This is the best all-around game we have played,” first-year head coach Kari Williams said. “In all our games, we have always been there but never seem to put teams away. Tonight we did that. I am proud of my girls. This was the best game by far as a team.”
The Lady Mustangs were lead by senior guard Laura Hennesse’s 22 points with junior center Sara Hoeft and Jennifer Olvera each hitting the boards hard with 11 rebounds apiece.
The game started quick for the Lady Mustangs – who took an early lead and maintained it for the rest of the game. It all started with an outstanding block from Olvera, who then got the ball to Hennesse for a big three-pointer.
In the second half, each team shared baskets for the first five minutes until Gilroy pulled away with runs that could only be stopped by timeouts.
By the end of the night, the Lady Mustangs would have two victories with their hard work and great play.
“I was really happy about our team’s performance,” Hennessee said. “I have not done very good in the last couple of games and I needed to step up as a leader.”
