Dear Editor,

It’s got to be tough running a business on Monterey Street when there is no Monterey Street (to speak of)! For that reason I’m in favor of anything these merchants can do to keep the downtown area alive in the hearts and minds of Gilroyans. Well, one such effort, the free summertime movie series, ended Wednesday.

I just wanted to applaud the efforts of the Downtown Business Association and the City of Gilroy Community Services Department for the wonderful weekly event. I especially wanted to thank the Ashford family (Steve, Linda, and Ty) for everything they did, from showing good family movies to selling delicious hot dogs to securing individual business sponsors to dishing out free popcorn to handing out chalk to kids (of all ages) to draw on the blacktop.

They are a class act. If they repeat the series next summer, all of us movie lovers should get out there and support them!
