The Gilroy Police Department will be conducting a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city on Saturday night, said Gilroy PD Sgt. Kurt Ashley.
Officers will man the checkpoint from 9 p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday. Motorists will be stopped momentarily at the checkpoint, where their sobriety and license will be checked, according to Sgt. Ashley.
Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension and incur expenses that often exceed $10,000, said a GPD press release.
In 2011, nearly 10,000 people were killed nationally in crashes where at least one driver or rider had a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher. In California, not designating a sober driver cost the lives of 774 people, said Sgt. Ashley.
The funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Law enforcement entities say that if people see a drunk driver, then they should call 911 immediately.
