GILROY – The Gilroy High girls golf team won its second league tournament of the early season Tuesday as the Lady Mustangs battled windy conditions on the challenging CordeValle GC for a combined 222 team score.

The Gilroy golfers were only one stroke ahead of second-place Hollister (223) – which won the only other league tournament on its home course at Ridgemark GC last week. Salinas finished in third place with a 226 team tally with Live Oak not far behind in fourth with a 227 and Alvarez in fifth with a 254.

“Many of the girls struggled on the golf course. With many water hazards and waste areas, CordeValle is a tough test for the girls,” head coach Eric Kuwada said. “It was a great equalizer today. The girls that could manage their games in the wind and maneuver through the hazards prevailed.”

Sophomore sensation Kristen Campos led the Lady Mustangs with a team-low 52 as senior Andrea Hugo added a 54, junior Carissa Filice tallied a 56, and senior Brittney Weber completed the top four scores with a 60. In addition, teammates Amy Kishimura and Carla Navarro finished with 61s.

“Kristen played a little better today, even with a new driver in the bag,” Kuwada said. “The most impressive is Carla Navarro who shot 61. Carla worked all summer on her golf game and she shot an amazing 61 on a tough golf course.

“That work ethic is prevalent on the golf team,” the coach added. “They are coming together as a team and pushing each other to be better.”

Gilroy will play at Twin Creeks on Thursday and then Tuesday – “which should be an easier course than the ones we have been playing,” Kuwada said.
