GHS sticks suffer 2-0 loss
MONTEREY – The Lady Mustang stickhandlers were hit with their first league loss Thursday as they were shut out by host York, 2-0.

“They beat us in the first 15 minutes of the game,” co-head coach Adam Gemar said.

York scored on its first two shots on net and only managed three shots for the game. York’s Kate Howard scored three minutes in and Cambria Minott-Gaines scored 10 minutes later. Goalie Cat Nelson recorded the shut out for York – which is 4-3 this season.

The Lady Mustangs (6-1) had defeated York twice this season both by 1-0 margins in a pre-season game and a T-CAL contest at Gilroy High School.

“They were probably hungry (to beat us),” Gemar said. “Literally, we controlled the whole second half. We had a ton of shots. We just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Gilroy returns to action on Thursday with a home match against Monterey at 3:30 p.m.

“We came out flat,” Gemar said. “It was a team effort, a team loss.”

In the junior varsity game, the Lady Mustangs won a 5-1 decision with goals scored by Mandolin Toews, Kelly Perkins, Vanessa Rodriguez, Sarah Whitney, and Katherine Kwong.
