Educator of Year Award Revived

Gilroy – The Gilroy Chamber of Commerce will include an Educator of the Year Award during its annual awards ceremony. The chamber has not yet decided on criteria for the award or if a cash prize will come with it, but expects to decide within the next few months.

“The recognition of our educators is probably much more important than the cash award that’s been done in the past,” said Susan Valenta, president of the chamber.

The city’s Economic Development Corporation discontinued its $1,000 award for educators in January. Corporation members said they had trouble getting nominations even after repeatedly reaching out to schools.

The chamber hopes that they will not suffer the same fate at their next award ceremony in February 2008.

Solorsano Cited as Distinguished

Gilroy – Ascencion Solorsano Middle School was chosen as one of 76 middle schools to receive a 2007 Distinguished School Award. The school was selected from a pool of 279 applicants and 478 eligible schools in California. The schools – which all receive Title 1 funds, usually meaning that more than 40 percent of their students come from low-income families – will be honored at an awards ceremony May 18 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.

“It’s a terrific feeling,” said school superintendent Sal Tomasello. “We presented (the award) to staff (Wednesday) and obviously everybody here is very excited. It’s a validation of all the hard work that the students, parents and staff over the past three years have been a part of.”

Solorsano first found out that it was likely to receive the award Feb. 22.
