DEAR EDITOR:

On behalf of the Gilroy Eigleberry Neighborhood Association (G.E.N.A.) I would like to thank all of the great people of Gilroy who have taken the time and effort to support our cause of attempting to make the Eigleberry Neighborhood a better place to live and do business.

We have had three inaugural events made possible by a grant from Community Foundation of Silicon Valley. On May 21 we had our neighborhood social. Councilman Al Pinheiro spoke about the importance of getting involved in the community. Community Police Officer Rachel Munoz spoke about police staffing. Lorraine Corrasquillo from South Valley Housing gave information on affordable housing. Nine businesses set up tables to display their products and services. More than 50 residents and business merchants attended.

Our second event was a Neighborhood Cleanup/BBQ on June 21. I would like to thank Mayor Tom Springer and Councilman Charlie Morales for coming out getting their hands dirty while assisting with the dumpsters. Special thanks to Lisa Jensema and Marilyn Roaf from the City of Gilroy for helping us with a dumpster on short notice! We filled four big dumpsters.

Our last event was a neighborhood crime watch and fire safety meeting on July 23, coordinated by Officer Rachel Munoz. Thanks to the Gilroy police officers and fire department for their great information and resources on how to be aware of potential problems and how to report them. Thanks to Council members Al Pinheiro and Peter Arrellano for taking the time to address the residents.

Although our turnout wasn’t what we expected, we have a great core of neighborhood residents who are ready and willing to take on the task of making the neighborhood safe for EVERYONE. Finally I would like to thank the downtown merchants who’s support of raffle prizes and encouragement was overwhelming.

Eleanor Ledford, the mail carrier downtown, introduced me to all these great people as we solicited them for raffle prizes. We were NOT turned down by ANY business.

In most instances before we finished our pitch they were already offering us merchandise or gift certificates.

Special thanks to neighborhood residents Victor Frias, Marbella Lopez, Maria Tamez and Alejandro for circulating fliers and making residents aware of the events. Luz and Luis Reynoso for making the very tasty food for our last event.

Merchants that donated raffle prizes: Darlene Sotelo-Dicar Insurance, Station 55, Gilroy Flowers, Frank’s Garden Florist, Harvest Time Restaurant, El Grullense, Cielito Lindo, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Gilroy Guitar Gallery, Skin Tech, Head Trip Salon, Gilroy Skate Shop, Cuts & Curls, Milias Barbershop, Frame your Family in Eyewear, Filice Sports and Collectibles, Katherine Filice-Articulate Solutions, Williams Dental Care, Mayfalda’s Bridal, Vacuum Center of Gilroy, Wes Shoe Repair, Bike Center, Joint Venture, Dick Bruhn, JJ’s Boop N Stuff, Rok’s Tae Kwon Do, Charles Coachman-Antiques, Arteaga’s Market, El Charrito Market, Carnitas Michoacan, Las Americas Bakery. Special thanks to VFW Post 6309 and hall board members for donating the use of the hall for all three events. And ALL volunteers who make it happen.
