A text message has been making the rounds in Gilroy, distributing information that falsely claims an Amber Alert has been issued for the area.
The message claims that a 3-year-old girl was abducted by a man in a new silver truck and gives the license plate. However, this is not a real Amber Alert – broadcasts that alert residents to missing and exploited children in their locality – said a woman who answered the phone at the Amber Alert hotline.
“We’ve got several calls yesterday and today regarding the fake Amber Alert,” said the woman, who would only identify herself as Marini.
The calls came from across the United States, she said. She also did not know how the message originated.
