Katrina Carter had a game that will get stat lovers nodding their heads in approval.
Her five goals in Gilroy’s 9-0 win over Live Oak Thursday was impressive on its own, but it was the order by which the Berkley commit collected them.
A goal in fourth minute of the second half gave her a hat trick following two first half goals. A goal in the sixth minute gave her a natural hat trick—scoring three goals without anyone else scoring. A goal in the 19th minute gave her a natural hat trick for the second half.
“I can’t really do it without my teammates. We had a lot of great connections and a lot of great communication, so it made it really easy,” Carter said.
The Mustangs took control early, riding goals from Carter (fifth minute) and Maddy Cox (seventh minute) to shock Live Oak early in the game.
“We just need to get it early because we play down to certain teams’ levels, so it was really important that we got our goals going,” Carter said.
After Cox scored again in the 16th minute, Carli Colyer and Ellie Sausen got into the mix, netting goals in the 19th and 22nd minutes, respectively.
“I was worried about the turf being new and a little slower, but they were passing really well,” said GHS coach Adam Gemar. “The passing and communication has been really good.”
Cox is just a sophomore and is already catching the eyes of her teammates.
“Maddy has improved so much this season. We’re honestly so proud of her,” Carter said. “She came in last year. She played softball and we made her come and play. She had a really while hit last year with her softball, but she’s really got it under control.”
Live Oak, meanwhile, had hoped it could ride the emotion of a dramatic overtime win on Tuesday at Presentation.
“It was all mental. A lot of mental mistakes,” said LO coach Gina Sanders. “We had a really awesome game on Tuesday where we had all this energy and this fight. And today, we made (Gilroy) bigger than they really (are). So it got to ourselves mentally.”
But down its best goal scoring threat, the team wasn’t able to put much pressure on the Mustangs’ defense.
Live Oak had threats early in the game, but keeper Jackie Jauregui kept her zone clear whenever the Acorns got down low.
By the second half, however, most of the Acorns’ attacks fizzled as they approached the circle.
That allowed Carter to take over in the second.
But the score aside, Sanders was still proud of some of her younger players who stepped up and set a tone for the Acorns.
“Ally Salzwedel … just never gave up and just kept working so hard. Even from the very beginning she was setting the tone like she did all game,” Sanders said. “It was nice to see that coming from a first year varsity sophomore.”
Sanders also highlighted Haley Fedalizo as having a good game on defense by keeping to the fundamentals.
