It’s no surprise that one of Gilroy High field hockey’s most successful seasons as a team has resulted in plenty of individual awards.
After compiling an 18-2-1 record and making an appearance in the Central Coast Section semifinals, matching the furthest any GHS field hockey team has ever gone, two Mustangs were named to the All-CCS First Team (Laura Spellman and Elise Ogle), three were placed to the Second Team (Lexi MacPhail, Jenna Vivian and Dani Hemeon), and three were named Honorable Mention (Marissa McBride, Jennifer Rose and Geralyn Moon).
Spellman, Rose Vivian, Ogle and Hemeon all made the All-Tri-County Athletic League First Team, while McBride, MacPhail, Moon, Katelyn Nebesnick and Mandi Jo Torres were placed on the All-TCAL Second Team. Emily Costa was given the league’s Sportsmanship Award.
The Mustangs had 17 different players recognized as scholar athletes – Kristina Chuck, Danielle Dias, Stephanie Gomez, Amanda Poso, Kasandra Kachakji, Alyssa Kroeger, Tayler Schaut, Alex Rose, Jennifer Rose, Costa, Hemeon, McBride, Moon, Nebesnick, Ogle, Spellman, Vivian – and could be sending a record four players on to the Division I level of college field hockey.
Spellman and Jennifer Rose will be playing at Cal Berkeley next season, while McBride and Vivian look to be good bets to end up on a team in the fall.
Coaches Adam and Erin Gemar will be kicking off club tryouts at Gilroy High on Sunday, Jan. 11, from 1-4 p.m. Ages 5-and-up are encouraged to tryout for the spring season. For more information, contact the Gemars at (408) 500-5699.
