SAN JOSE – Over the course of its three games Friday and Saturday at the Leigh Longhorn Roundup tournament, the Gilroy High field hockey team had upwards of 30 shots on target en route to 12 goals in that span.
The Mustangs held their opponents – Cupertino, Corning and Prospect – entirely at bay, yielding not one shot on net – not to mention no goals at all.
“It was a pretty successful tournament,” head coach Adam Gemar understated. “I kind of wish we played in the other bracket.”
GHS silenced Cupertino 2-0 on Friday then shut out both Corning and Prospect 5-0 on Saturday to claim a co-championship.
“I thought Cupertino, defensively, was pretty good,” Gemar said. “The game against Corning was our best effort.”
Katelyn Nebesnick and Aubrey Young tallied for the Mustangs against Cupertino.
Dani Hemeon, who had a role in all five points against Corning in the Mustangs’ first contest Saturday, scored twice versus the Cardinals and assisted on goals by Monica Marrazzo and Esmeralda Gobea, who had two.
Shayna Robledo struck twice in the win over Prospect, while Alyssa Kroeger, Marrazzo and Young had a score each.
Nebesnick and Krissy Chuck were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Mustangs embark on their first season in the Mount Hamilton Division on Tuesday, traveling to Saratoga to take on the Falcons. GHS then hits the road again to face Los Altos on Thursday.
“We are excited to start league,” Gemar said. “Maybe a little nervous going in, but I think we’ll be alright.”
