Holding his dog, resident Dan Vargas talks to firefighters Randy Decker, left, and Marc Stelling following the two-alarm fire at 1421 Filice Court Tuesday night. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one upstairs bedroom, Assistant Gilroy Fire Chief Dave Bozzo said. The fire was started by a candle left unattended and caused close to $30,000 in damage, Bozzo said, including smoke damage to the rest of the upstairs. Two city fire engines and two engines from South Santa Clara County Fire District contained the blaze within five minutes of arrival. Fire officials were alerted to the fire after a neighbor behind the house saw smoke and called 911.
