Firefighter compensation survey: The Red Phone recently received a call regarding the Dispatch’s firefighter compensation survey and that, although it was not scientific, the final results may have been swayed by mass e-mails sent out with the ‘correct answers.’
For the person who called this in with ‘personal experience,’ or anyone else who might have insight on this, the Dispatch is very interested in looking into this and perhaps following up with an article. Call or e-mail the Red Phone, preferably with a copy of the mass e-mail, and our reporters will investigate. However, without further information and proof, the Dispatch cannot report on it.
Need speed sign: “Good morning! Will there ever be a speed limit posted at the city water tank, 25mph on Miller Avenue? They go around 45. It’s just a country road, not a speedway. Thanks.”
Good morning to you enthusiastic caller! The Red Phone contacted Don Dey with Gilroy’s Engineering Department, who said that road will be checked out.
“I will have that roadway section investigated for the installation of a speed limit sign,” Dey said. “In checking our last survey that was done, there was no survey for that particular roadway section, so we’ll investigate what the speed would be there.”
And although the city will look into it, it will be awhile.
“We will pick that section up in our next survey, which will be done in 2006,” Dey said. “So one way or the other we will get a speed limit sign up.”
What’s going in?: “Hey Red Phone. I have a blight complaint at the old Nob Hill grocery store that was torn down on Westwood. There’s a chain fence around the site they demolished and there’s weeds all over and it’s really an eyesore. When the hell are they going to fix that or build something? Bye.”
The Red Phone touched base with the city’s planning department and got some information from Greg Polovinsky, who said the construction process has begun.
“I don’t know exactly the schedule, but they did go through their pre-construction meeting and they’re starting construction,” he said.
As far as what will be constructed in the area, look for apartments in the future.
“(The site will contain) 170 luxury apartment units in different kinds of formats such as townhouse or apartment flats,” according to Polovinsky. “They’re doing the demolition and now they’re starting the assembly of a lot of the wood products they’ll be using in construction behind the site.”
Check your kids: “Hi, I’m calling because of the incident that happened on Friday (May 14, String of fights, GHS lockdown). I want to tell that parents of the kids who got arrested and the other ones that didn’t, but still participated in the fights at Gilroy High, that they need to put their kids in check. That’s my call to the Red Phone. Thanks.”
Thanks for the call and the comment.
