Gilroy goes up 5-0 vs. Watsonville before the rain halts play in
third
Gilroy – The Curse lives.

Lately, it seems every time Gilroy High meets Watsonville on the field of play, the weather has a different plan in mind.

The boys’ soccer team had its highly anticipated rematch with the Wildcatz rained out on Dec. 13. Proposed makeup dates were similarly squashed by circumstance.

On Thursday, the GHS baseball team faced Watsonville for what was supposed to be the first real game of the season. But when the mound became slippery and dangerous, the game was quickly called … another Mustang-Wildcatz clash done in by the heavens.

The afternoon wasn’t entirely a wash, however. In two full innings played, Gilroy had already jumped out 5-0, an offensive barrage highlighted by Peter Mickartz’s three-run shot that scored leadoff man Josh Sterling and shortstop Drew Andersen ahead of the senior rightfielder and pitcher.

Head coach Clint Wheeler was happy with what he saw in limited action. Starter Anthony Lucia pitched well, the defense behind him was tight and the offense appeared up to Wheeler’s prediction that several bats will combine to make up for the loss of TCAL MVP Ben Hemeon’s production at the plate.

“We’ll spread his 50 RBIs around,” the coach joked about the departed slugger, now a red-shirt freshman at Sacramento State.

Gilroy next faces Aragon on Tuesday, Feb. 22 in a Los Gatos Tourney match the Mustangs host at Gilroy High.
