The City of Gilroy has updated the intersection of First Street and Kern Avenue.

Drivers are now prohibited from making left turns to eastbound First Street from Kern Avenue. There are new signs posted indicating that the traffic entering onto First Street from Kern Avenue can only make a right hand turn.

A newly painted center island on Kern Avenue is considered a traffic island and driving through or crossing over the yellow painted lines is a violation of the California Vehicle Code, according to city officials.

City officials said the move is meant to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. An 120-unit apartment complex is nearing completion near the intersection.
