The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

CHEERS: For those who have converted to absentee ballots – fully 35 percent of county registered voters – and taken the time to vote. Not only have they done their duty, they can summarily toss all the worthless political junk mail and mute the multitude of misleading TV ads.

CHEERS: For local firefighters, who responded adeptly and quickly to two rural structure fires Thursday. The quick-strike quelling made sure that we weren’t dealing with a Croy Road Fire situation again. Nice work.

JEERS: For the fatal pit bull attack on a

6-month-old kitten in Gilroy that caused enough ruckus to bring a man out of his home at 11pm Sunday armed with a baseball bat. Despite all the pleas to the contrary, pit bulls are the culprits in many violent canine outbursts. Whether it’s the owner’s stupidity or the dog’s nature becomes immaterial.

CHEERS: For County Supervisor Don Gage and Gilroy Mayor Al Pinheiro, who are working together to form a coalition between Santa Clara and San Benito counties in order to present a united front on desperately needed improvements for highways 152 and 25. If state Proposition 1B does pass, they want to be ready to push for funds. That’s pro-active government, and anything that can be done to fix Pacheco Pass Highway is a godsend.

JEERS: For the City Council which approved the Mussalem Miller Avenue development, which is now on indefinite hold. The Council allowed an intrusion into an existing neighborhood that considerably increases density. Now the city is stuck with a dirt patch, and the next thing will be a request from the developer for more concessions because the project doesn’t “pencil out.”
