Freshman finishes with seven points in Gavilan men’s hoops 52-51
win over Hartnell
GILROY – The Gavilan College men’s basketball team came out as the aggressor Friday night, as the Rams owned the boards and edged visiting Hartnell, 52-51.
“Hartnell did not have any putbacks on the offensive boards in the first half, and that carried over into the second half. That was the big contributor to our success tonight,” head coach Chris Shoemaker said.
With the score tied at 51-51, freshman Mike Fugate hit one of two free throws with 8.4 seconds on the clock.
Freshman Lionel Smith (10 points) with his relentless rebounding and Fugate (seven points) with his timely three-point shooting led the Rams in the first half. Sophomore Tommy Sondgroth turned his ankle in the first half, but came back and scored all of his 12 points in the second half. Freshman Tim Goode (12 points) net all his points in the second half as well.
Gavilan led 23-18 at the half.
The Rams will head to Cabrillo College on Thursday night at seven o’clock.
