GILROY – Gaeta’s Taqueria opened the Gilroy Community Services Department’s Men’s C League Championship Series Thursday with a 57-51 clipping of FFC at Solorsano Gymnasium.

Four series are scheduled to continue this week, including three games Wednesday at Solorsano Gym. Beale Properties takes a 1-0 lead in the Men’s D play against Headstart at 7 p.m. The Men’s C tilt is set for 8 p.m. The Sparks (1-0) test Above the Rim in Women’s League competition at 9 p.m. Pro Electric-Gavilan Honda-Rio Nio (1-0) meets Gilroy Young Plants at 7 p.m. Thursday in Men’s E action.

FFC forced a best 2-of-3 Championship Series with a 66-45 nod over Gaeta’s in Tuesday. Neil Garrett threaded seven three-point field goals in a 35-point outburst for the winners. Sonny Old Elk scored 15 points and Juan Rios added 11 for Gaeta’s.

The Taqueria offense regrouped for Thursday’s series opener, led by 25 points from Richard Klauer. David Herrera tossed in 14 Gaeta’s points, while Garrett scored 15 points, Darwin Collins 13 for FFC.

Beale Properties won three games last week, including two to earn the club a berth in the D Championship Series.

Beale turned back Pizza N Stuff 77-62 Tuesday as Armando Ocampo scored 30 points. Miguel Gilliard popped in 26 Pizza N Stuff points.

Ocampo added 26 points Wednesday as Beale took the second-half D title with a 55-52 squeaker over Cordevalle. Mike Martinez logged 13 points, Bobby Martin 11 for the Golfers.

Ocampo was good for 20 Thursday as Beale opened the series with a 54-46 nod over Headstart. Bob Lemmon used four 3-pointers to score 26 points for Headstart.

Pro Electric-Gavilan Honda-Rio Nio snapped a first-place tie with the Playaz atop the E League’s second half with a 57-49 win Wednesday. Tony Werner meshed 23 points, Danny Rodriguez 15 for the winners. Henry Huerta tossed in 17 points and Paul Garcia added 12 for the Playaz.

The Pros opened the E series with a 63-39 win over Gilroy Young Plants. Andres Espinosa scored 16 points, Mike Sandoval 11 and Rodriguez 10 for the winners. Robert Silvia hustled to 16 points, Skyler Thornton 12 for Gilroy Young Plants.

Above the Rim broke a tie with the Sparks atop the second-half Women’s League standings with a 41-18 decision Tuesday. Marta Salas made 14 points, Heather Stewart 12 for the Rim. Shanah Keyes paced the Sparks offense with six points.

The Sparks rebounded with a 37-27 win Thursday in the series opener over Above the Rim, keyed by 17 points from Melanie Arner. Melissa Deleissegues anchored the Rim offense with 13 points.
