Police arrested four Morgan Hill gang members for their involvement in a mugging outside a downtown bank Monday afternoon.

Jose Diaz, 20, Jesus Diaz, 20, Jessica Uribe, 18, and a male juvenile, all of Almond Way, are accused of pushing a San Jose woman onto the ground and stealing her purse as she walked from the ATM machine to her car at Wells Fargo Bank at 17590 Monterey Road, police said.

The robbery occurred about 4:39 p.m. A citizen waved down Officer Joe Burdick, who was in the area on patrol, and told him a strong-arm robbery had just happened.

Three males and one female had driven around the bank, appearing to case it out prior to the robbery. As the 40-year-old female victim was walking away from the ATM, two of the male suspects got out of the car, approached her from behind and shoved her, according to Morgan Hill Police Commander David Swing.

They stole the woman’s purse and fled into the waiting vehicle, which was parked around the corner and left the scene. The victim received minor injuries.

During the crime, the woman screamed, attracting the attention of passing witnesses who chased the suspects and caused them to drop the stolen purse. One of the witnesses was able to write down the getaway vehicle’s license plate number, Swing said.

Police caught up with the suspected robbers at their residence on the 1700 block of Almond Way. The four suspects, who are known to police as Sureno gang members, were arrested for robbery and booked into Santa Clara County Jail.

Anyone with more information or who witnessed this crime may contact Morgan Hill Police at (408) 779-2101.
