Garbage truck catches fire on U.S. 101

A smoldering South Valley Disposal and Recycling truck caused southbound traffic to back up on U.S. 101 south of Tennant Avenue for hours Monday afternoon.

Cause of the blaze is not known at the time of posting. Officers were still at the scene as of 4:40 p.m.

According to California Highway Patrol spokesman Chris Armstrong, two CHP officers responded at 2:31 p.m. At least two CalFire engines also responded. The right lane was closed as of 2:45 p.m., and traffic was slowing and backing up, Armstrong said.

The right lane was still closed at 4:40 p.m., and a tow truck was en route.

Smoke from the truck floated across U.S. 101, over cars backed up to Dunne Avenue and beyond.
