Cloud went the distance and held West Valley in check until the Vikings scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull out the win.
Gavilan scored twice in the first inning. Megan Smart bunted for a base hit and Jen McBain had the first of her two singles. Both scored on Cloud’s base hit.
“Haylie pitched a great game,” Ram coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson said. “We were aggressive on defense. The chips just didn’t fall in our favor.”
Breann Hernandez had a double for Gavilan, which is at San Jose City College for a 3pm game Tuesday.
Baseball
Cupertino – De Anza College got an early lead and then held off a late Gavilan charge before emerging with a 5-3 Coast Conference win Thursday.
The Dons grabbed an early 2-0 lead and extended it to 4-0 in the seventh. It was 5-1 heading into the top of the ninth. Daniel Salinas had an RBI double as the Rams rallied for two ninth-inning runs.
Gavilan had its chances but left the bases loaded twice.
The Rams are home at noon Saturday for a conference game with San Jose City College.
