Gavilan Coaching ShuffleShoemaker resigns as men’s basketball
coach; hirings for baseball, women’s soccer on tap
Gilroy – By the beginning of next month, the Gavilan College coaching staff could have a very different complexion.

The college is currently in the process of hiring head coaches for three sports: men’s basketball, men’s baseball and women’s soccer. Women’s soccer coach Marty Behler left at the end of the fall semester. Two weeks ago, men’s basketball coach Chris Shoemaker resigned.

The men’s baseball position, which is currently held by part-time employee Neal Andrade, is being turned into a full-time employee position for the 2006-2007 school year.

Gavilan athletic director Ron Hannon said the college has conducted interviews for the newly-designated position for baseball and the decision is “pending board (of trustees) approval.” Three finalists were selected, but Hannon could not say whether Andrade was one of them. Andrade could not be reached for comment.

“We’ve completed the hiring process, completed the interview process,” Hannon said Tuesday. The Gavilan board of trustees will make a final decision at its next meeting on Tuesday, June 13.

As for the men’s basketball and women’s soccer vacancies, Hannon hopes to have new coaches hired in the next couple weeks.
