Gavilan’s three early runs seemed as if they’d be enough to lift it past Skyline — or at least send the game into extras.
But the Trojans had other plans, getting the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to top Gavilan 4-3 in San Bruno Thursday.
With two outs in the top of the first, Danny Guiterrez doubled and then scored off a Steven Martinez double. Javier Garcia hit an RBI-triple to score Martinez and Jake Conlan was walked to put runners on the corners for the Rams. An error on the catcher allowed Conlan to steal second and Garcia to score, giving Gavilan a 3-0 lead.
Martinez and Garcia both went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. DJ Santellano got the start, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four in six innings of work. Robert Gomez was handed the loss, giving up one run on three hits through two innings.
Skyline answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, but the Rams were able to maintain their lead until the bottom of the sixth when a Trojan run evened the score.
The Rams (10-17 overall, 4-11 in conference) also lost to Chabot 13-7 at home Wednesday, a make-up contest from Tuesday’s rainout.
Chabot held an 13-1 lead after eight innings when Gavilan’s bats came alive. With the bases loaded, Guitterez hit a three-RBI double to score Adam Kocina, Eric Guill-Perez and Javier Jimenez. Garcia walked and Guiterrez stole third, setting him up to score on a passed ball. Garcia, who was on second, scored off a Conlan double to cut Chabot’s lead to 13-6.
Andrew Bueno singled and Conlan moved to third, scoring two plays later for the final Rams run when Jalen Salazar grounded out.
Gavilan will host Ohlone at noon Saturday.
