The Gilroy High boys varsity soccer team played Bellarmine to a 1-1 tie at the half, however the Bells collected the deciding goal in the second half for a 2-1 victory in Gilroy on Thursday night.
Overall we played very well against a very talented Bellarmine squad,” GHS head coach Armando Padilla said.
Padilla added that freshmen Andres Jimenez, Alejandro Flores and Sean Kaufman had standout games.
“All the kids played with energy and kept up in the game all night,” Padilla said.
The Bells took an early lead in the first half, but the Mustangs responded nearing halftime. An offensive push resulted in a corner kick. David Valencia delivered a spot-on ball into the box that found Jorge Ontiveros’ head for his second goal of the season.
Bellarmine broke the 1-1 tie in the 60th minute on a goal from Stephen Song. Bells’ 6-foot-2 goalie Eric Schmitt thwarted a pair of Jonathan Diaz De Leon equalizer opportunities late in the game.
The Mustangs are back on the pitch Tuesday at home against Yerba Buena.
BOYS BASKETBALL
The Christopher High boys varsity basketball team dropped its second straight game at the Los Gatos Wildcats Shootout, falling 56-35 to Woodside.
“We struggled to do much offensively,” Bahner said. “We could easily be 1-1 at this tournament, but our focus right now is salvaging a win and finding a way to do that.”
The Loss came two days after a difficult 66-63 loss to host Los Gatos on Tuesday, in which the Cougars led 63-61 with 19 seconds left
The Cougars wrap up tournament play today against Saratoga at 3:30 p.m. at Los Gatos High.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
The CHS girls varsity basketball team faced a versatile Santa Cruz club in the first round of the Watsonville Tournament and suffered a 65-39 setback.
The loss is the first of the season for the 2-1 Cougars. Ashley Claussen paced Santa Cruz with 18 points, while Hanna Tabron posted a game-high 19 points.
The Cougars are back at it Friday in the second round against San Benito at 3:30 p.m.
