Gilroy – A quick rundown of recent contests involving the Gilroy High Mustangs:
Field Hockey
Gilroy found itself in the second tight, low-scoring match of its young season Friday afternoon, losing 1-0 to 2004 CCS co-champion Saratoga at home.
The field hockey ‘Stangs christened the new artificial turf at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex turf at GHS after the team, having the option to play on the nearby grass, voted to try out the new field.
“There weren’t a lot of scoring opportunities,” said co-head coach Adam Gemar after the loss, adding: “I think they need to add some more of that rubbery stuff to make (the artificial turf) more field hockey-friendly.”
Saratoga scored the only goal of the game when Gilroy goalie Stephanie Glenn came out aggressively to save a shot, then saw the ball squirt out to get scooped up and re-shot by a Saratoga attacker.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Mustangs lost their second game in as many days Thursday, falling 23-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 12-15 to North Monterey County.
“That third game killed us,” said coach Sue Grogan.
Despite holding North County at match point for several points in the fifth and decisive game, the ‘Stangs weren’t quite able get past the Condors.
“There was just a point where we couldn’t push past them,” Grogan said. “But after the game, I commended them. For having to play three games, with no practice to go over some things that had happened in the previous game and fix them, they did really well.”
Leading the Mustangs were Katherine Hussey (13 assists, 4 kills, 6 aces), Kayla Meazell (8 aces, 4 kills) and Jessica Groppe (9 kills).
Girls’ Tennis
Gilroy lost 4-3 in its season opener to a tough Aptos team at home at the GHS tennis courts Thursday.
Despite the team loss, No. 2 singles player Kayla Medina (6-1, 6-2), and the doubles teams of Amanda Logan and Sarah Welka (6-2, 6-2), and Anneliese Zelina and Rita McDonough (6-4, 6-2) all won their matches.
The Mustangs were close to a team win, but the No. 1 doubles team of Monica Valdez and Robben Beckman lost in a tough tiebreaker, said coach Randy Barbaglia.
Valdez and Beckman won the first set 6-3, then lost 1-6 and fell in the 10-point tiebreaker 12-10.
In an exhibition match, the doubles team of Megan Hemik and Holly Hunter won.
