South County residents are invited by two Gilroy churches to participate in special events next weekend.

“Do something good and have fun doing it” is the theme of the first annual Dinner-Dance sponsored by the Phil-Am Community of Gilroy (an organization of Filipino-Americans affiliated with St. Mary Roman Catholic Church). It will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. Mary’s Cullen Hall (11 First St.) from 6:30pm to midnight.

Guests are asked to dress “semiformal.” There will be a variety of music provided: rock, salsa, rumba, slow-dance and a tango exhibition by Del and Arnold Agbayani. The evening will be emceed by Dorie Sugay, president of the group sponsoring the event.

All proceeds will go toward the Phil-Am Community’s many charitable projects:

n Housing and feeding the local needy through The Lord’s Table

n Schooling and housing abandoned children

n Assisting victims of natural disasters.

A festive meal of Chinese and Filipino delicacies will be served, as well as a selection of tempting desserts. Guests are also invited to participate in a raffle for prizes.

The evening’s cost is $35; tickets are available at the door or by calling the group’s treasurer, Evelyn Miranda, at (408) 688-7708.

Also next weekend, on Sunday, Nov. 12, the Gilroy Presbyterian Church Health Ministries will be holding its ninth annual Health Faire from 10am to 12:45pm in the GPC Fellowship Hall, 6000 Miller Ave.

Just in time for the start of this year’s cold and flu season, a wide variety of resources will be available, mostly free of charge:

Flu shots ($5, seniors free), massage, vision screening, respiratory testing, glucose testing, hearing tests, glaucoma screening, oxygen concentration monitoring and blood pressure testing.

A breakfast will be served by the church’s Mexicali Team (youth who go to Baja California each spring on a mission of service) for $5 adults, $3 children.

Information will also be available about the following topics: Stephen’s Ministry, healthy foods, phone access for the handicapped and disabled, children’s health, aids for the visually impaired, senior information and resources. Costco pharmacy will be providing free water and prescription information.

This Health Faire for the public is just one aspect of the church’s innovative Health Ministries program which provides medical information and support to both parishioners and other community members.

Activities include visiting shut-ins to check basic health indicators, loaning medical devices like crutches and canes, and disease-prevention/safety classes. For more information, call the church at 842-3000.
