first official meet Saturday at the Early Bird Invitational held at
Toro Park in Salinas.
SALINAS – The Gilroy High cross country team competed in its first official meet Saturday at the Early Bird Invitational held at Toro Park in Salinas.

The boys’ side finished 17th in a very competitive field of 35 schools. Junior Tim Williams paced the boys, clocking a 3-mile time of 17:12. Senior Juan Velasquez trailed right behind Williams with a time of 17:15. Raul Cobarubius, Armando Cobarubias, Jose Gabino Ramirez, Jon Thielges and Daniel Apuzzo, round out the top finishers for the Mustangs.

Sophomores Athena Alarcon, Savannah Silacci and Maritza Ruelas each placed in the top 10 in their class with Alarcon posting a 20:27 for a 25th overall out of more than 500 competitors in the girls section.

Patty Hernandez crossed the finish line with a time of 20:40 for a 14th-place showing out of 127 senior racers.

The girls’ team combined for a third-place overall showing behind second place Mountain View and first place Aptos.
