Gilroy – If this were March or April, the Gilroy softball team might not have had to play through the rain against North Salinas Wednesday.
Consequently, the Mustangs might not have suffered an 8–2 loss.
But this is May, and there’s no time to reschedule games, so the Mustangs had to trudge on in the sludge and mud.
The ‘Stangs scattered six hits, but gave up six unearned runs and committed four errors in the sloppy weather, dropping them to 1–6 in TCAL.
“It just wasn’t a nicely executed defensive game for us today,” said head coach Julie Berggren. “We’ve got to push toward winning Friday, Monday and Wednesday. There’s nothing we can do about what happened today.”
The good news is that the ‘Stangs could still make the playoffs if they get closer to .500 in the next week. Overall, Gilroy’s record is 11–14.
“We need to win all three (of our remaining games) to have a better chance,” Berggren said. “You don’t know until you go to that (seeding) meeting who has what points.”
Pitcher Sarah Villar (11–12) allowed 12 hits in the loss and finished with two strikeouts and two walks.
Gilroy scored its two runs in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late.
“We didn’t talk after the game today because it was raining,” Berggren said. “But I have a feeling tomorrow they’ll come out focused. This team bounces back really well and doesn’t let losses bother them.”
