Monterey – Estevan Gonzales was on his game Wednesday at Laguna Seca, but Gilroy as a team struggled, finishing third in a Tri-County Athletic League tournament at Laguna Seca Golf Club.

Gonzales shot 7-over-par 54 over 12 holes for the Mustangs, whose 292 total was third behind Palma (268) and Salinas (283).

The Chieftains, who have won every league tournament, got 51 from Bruce Taylor, 52 from Kris Castello, and 53 from Greg Classen.

“We shot way above our norm,” GHS coach Eric Kuwada said. “We worked on several things (Tuesday) during practice and Estevan found his swing again. Jordan (Miller) struggled with a couple of lost balls and a poor short game. His 60 was uncharacteristic from his performance Monday. We have had a tough week.”

Miller was coming off a personal-best 77 at Aptos in another match where the Mustangs were not at their best.

On Wednesday, Jonathon Higgins and Kelly Cox backed up Gonzales with 59s.

Salinas’ Ken Munro was medalist at 50 as the Cowboys sliced one-point off Gilroy’s hold on second place in the TCAL behind Palma. The Mustangs still lead Salinas by 1.5 points with the TCAL finals scheduled at noon Monday at Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club.
