SALINAS – Gilroy High’s varsity girls volleyball team got off to a slow start but was able to pull out a five-set win at Alvarez Tuesday night: 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-12.
Gilroy coach Sue Grogan gave credit to the Eagles for coming a long way in terms of building up their program from year’s past.
“They are a much stronger team than they have been in the past,” she said. “Their coach has worked very hard at raising their program up to another level.”
With players out sick part of the week from practice, the Mustangs have found it tough to build consistency, Grogan said.
“We are still struggling to find our groove,” she said.
Gilroy’s junior varsity team won 25-11, 25-19, and the freshman team came back to win a three-set victory – 15-26, 26-24, 15-3 – after trailing by 15 at match point in the second set.
