Dear Editor,
Summer must be near. Those darling electric and gas-powered

Dear Editor,

Summer must be near. Those darling electric and gas-powered scooters are starting to show up again on our city streets. While walking our dogs in the late afternoon and evening hours we’re seeing the resurgence of those cute motorized scooters streaking by, usually driven by helmet less young boys. Stop signs and other rules of the road are apparently meaningless to them.

Recently my wife had a close encounter of the second kind, (remember the movie, “Close Encounters”) but could had been of the third kind.

One daring young boy riding a scooter was crisscrossing between lanes down Miller Avenue. He turn onto third street without stopping and proceeded towards Wren Street passing cars on the right and left and finally made an illegal turn in front of two cars traveling in opposite directions and sped off into Neverland.

Those of us that drive or walk the streets of Gilroy probably have seen these scooters, cruising the streets and sometimes sidewalks at full throttle.

What is going through their heads, and even worse, what is going though their parent’s heads.

Recently in the news it was reported that this type of motorized vehicle is involved in over 10,000 reported accidents every year in California. Plus there have been several recalls, dealing with weak welds and tires breaking off.

The Dispatch reported on this issue last summer, so maybe its time they print a reminder that touches on the dangers and legality of scooters driven on public streets. Look out because they’re coming to your local neighborhood.

Alan L. Johnson, Gilroy
