History could be in the making for Gilroy Thursday night in Watsonville as a perfect regular season is on the line against the Wildcatz.
The Mustangs are 9-0 for the first time going back to at least 2000. With a 42-6 win over North Monterey County last week, Gilroy surpassed the 2008 mark of eight wins in a row to start a season.
In the game, Brandon Weiler had three touchdown passes, two going to Braulio Rodriguez.
Max Pierce, Christian Rodriguez, Joseph Barnes and Parker Wong all had touchdowns in the win as the Mustangs breezed by the Condors.
The win secured a Pacific Division championship as Gilroy is assured to finish with no worse than a tie with Alisal. Because the Mustangs own the head-to-head with Alisal, Gilroy will own the tiebreaker for the top seed in the division.
There’s a lot of questions that have yet to be answered for Gilroy beyond whether the Mustangs can finish with a perfect season.
The Mustangs are gunning for a top seed in the Central Coast Section playoffs, which they will likely secure with a win over Watsonville.
Out of Gilroy’s hands is whether the Mustangs will appear in the Division V or Division IV playoffs.
The Mustangs are in a limbo zone between the two divisions and it will largely depend on who emerges from the Blossom Valley Athletic League-Santa Teresa Division.
On top of that, Santa Cruz upsetting St. Francis-Watsonville throws a wrench into the Division V playoff picture and helped to bump Gilroy up to Division IV, according to Prep2prep.com
Standing in Gilroy’s way is a Watsonville team that is 6-3 overall, but has taken its lumps in league play, falling to Alisal and Christopher.
The game is a make up when smoke forced the postponement from Oct. 13, pushing it back to this week.
When things are rolling well for Watsonville, things go well. The Wildcatz score 32.7 points per game in their wins. However, they are held to seven points per game in losses.
Watsonville is coming off of a rivalry win over Pajaro Valley and is on the outside looking in for the playoffs.
Gilroy is going to need to be careful it doesn’t allow the Wildcatz to get momentum as their season is on the line in the game, with a loss likely ending Watsonville’s season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm in Watsonville. Playoff seedings will be announced Sunday.
