Weather wreaks havoc on nation’s best at Stanford
Invitational

Stanford – Athletic excellence was in the air at the Stanford Invitational yesterday. But unfortunately for Bobby Best, a Gilroy senior competing in this elite track and field meet, there were some nasty elements at hand as well.
Hamstrung by a driving rain that left the facilities at Cobb Track and Angell Field in treacherous straights, Best managed a throw of 48-2 in the shot put -– well short of his personal record of 53-1, but a solid effort all things considered. The only ‘spinner’ among a group of throwers who preferred the ‘glider’ technique, Best was the most affected by the puddles and rain.
“I was soaking wet and it had been raining for the last three hours,” said Best. “I went there knowing I wasn’t going to have a good day.”
Best tackles the discus field today, happy that everyone will use the same form.
“That I’m looking forward to,” said Best. ” Everyone will be on the same playing field. It’ll be a lot more equal and fair. I’m hoping to get close to my personal best.”
