DEAR EDITOR:

While the past couple of months have seen many letters to the Dispatch with pro and con positions on a bigger Wal-Mart in Gilroy, it seems that most all of us are missing an obvious thorn under our very own thumbs – our own local U.S. Post Office.

One doesn’t have to go there very often to conclude that Gilroy residents have a postal facility that has become inadequate for our growing city. Morgan Hill with fewer people, has a well located and convenient post office facility, while Gilroy’s post office is challenged by:

• its location: because it’s not on a major street, it’s simply not convenient for the number of people who use it.

• the parking: inadequate for the number of people who use the facility.

• the outside mail depository: the one-way alley you must drive down after dropping off your mail is a safety challenge.

• the customer service area: during regular hours, seems like the lines of people are out the door most times.

I’d guess that the sorting and distribution space has also become inadequate. When I’ve asked postal employees their thoughts about having a “second-class post office” compared to Morgan Hill, their comments are “contact your local representatives and complain to them.”

Well, maybe it’s time to contact our local governmental representatives and insist that as our “public servants” they need to blast through bureaucratic red tape and get a new post office facility built for Gilroy within the next few years. Located in the right place, it might even be a spark for revitalizing downtown Gilroy. City Council members, are you listening?
