A 3-year-old girl suffered only moderate injuries after she fell from the window of a two-story apartment complex south of Gilroy High School Wednesday evening.

Ariel Montes received a broken jawbone and cut her lip after the fall, her grandmother Patricia Acuna said. She was scheduled to be released from the hospital sometime Thursday, Acuna said.

“She’ll be home today, thank God,” Acuna said Thursday morning.

Emergency responders were dispatched at 7:26 p.m. after the girl fell from the top story of the apartment complex at 6895 Princevalle St., according to the fire department and Acuna. The girl was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose via helicopter, which had landed at the high school.

Montes was playing on her mother’s bed, which stands next to the window on the south side of the apartment, when she began pushing against the screen and ultimately pushed herself out, Acuna said. Montes’ mother was in another room at the time of the incident, Acuna said.

Although the window on the north side of the apartment stands above a paved area, a dirt area appears to stand immediately behind the apartment where Montes fell.

Acuna said the accident could have been far worse.

“She cracked her jaw … and she has a hole in her lip – that’s it,” Acuna said.
