A furious comeback attempt came up just short for the GHS girls’ basketball team in a 61-56 loss to Thurgood Marshall High Wednesday.

Midway through the third quarter, Gilroy trailed the San Francisco school by 20 points in the first round of the Burlingame Tournament. But the Mustangs clawed their way back, cutting the deficit to just two with 90 seconds remaining.

In the end, though, an old nemesis did in Gilroy – the free-throw line.

The ‘Stangs finished just 5-of-18 from the charity stripe.

“We played the free-throw game,” GHS head coach Kari Williams, “and we ended up losing it.”

Williams wasn’t about to get down on her team, though.

“That comeback was awesome,” she said. “I’m proud of the girls. They just gutted it out and came back. It takes a lot of guts to be down by 20 and come back all the way to two down.

“Now we just need to work on that part about being down by 20.”

The Mustangs (5-3) trailed by six at halftime, but a 17-3 Marshall run to start the third quarter upped the score to 46-26. However, an 18-2 surge by Gilroy to start the fourth got the ‘Stangs right back in it.

GHS was led in scoring by junior guard Katherine Hussey and senior center Amanda Link, who scored 15 points a piece.

“I’m happy as I can be about a loss,” Williams said. “Hopefully this can carry us through to the next game.”

That next game comes against San Mateo High at 3:30 this afternoon.
