Players, coaches and families were welcomed to the 2010 Little League junior softball West Regional tournament with a dinner for all eight teams, including Gilroy’s 13-14-year-old representatives last Thursday in Tucson, Ariz.
Once the friendly salutations were out of the way, it was down to business, and Gilroy got right to work.
Gilroy opened Pool B (Utah, Washington, Arizona, Gilroy) play Friday against enterprise Little League out of Utah.
After falling behind 4-0 through three innings, Gilroy mounted a full-fledged comeback, scoring 11-unanswered runs for an 11-4 victory.
A pair of two-RBI doubles by Adrianna Ortega and Kristen Dennis tied the game at 4-all in the fourth. Gilroy went on to score six runs in the inning.
Nicole Green got the start in the circle, lasting three innings. Holly Lam got the win in relief, going four innings and collecting nine strikeouts along the way.
Friday’s win set up Saturday’s contest with District 5. Lam tossed a complete game one-hitter as Gilroy captured a 10-0 decision.
Once again the fourth inning proved to be the jackpot frame for Gilroy, posting six runs. Ortega had a triple and two RBI, Maritza Rodriguez produced a run-scoring single, and Dejah Raoff had an two-RBI double. Mackenzie Mitchell and Cristyn Simpson went 2-for-3.
Needing one win to advance to the championship game, Sunday’s game against Pool A top seed Queen’s creek was suspended in the bottom of the fourth due to rain. At the time Gilroy, the visiting team, was up 2-0. The is scheduled to continue Monday night.
MAJORS ALL-STARS WIN CONSOLATION CHAMPIONSHIP
The Gilroy Little League Majors softball All-Star team’s magical season came to an end over the weekend at the Western Regionals tournament in Vancouver, Wash.
Gilroy defeated Montana 8-4 in the Consolation final on Sunday to cap its playoff run.
Gilroy handily won each of its first three games, in Pool B play, but began to encounter some trouble in its final contest of pool play and in the semifinals.
The girls dropped a narrow 3-2 nod to Montana in a game that only determined semifinals seeding.
With the loss, Gilroy drew an undefeated Southern California team and lost 10-1.
However, Gilroy rebounded in the Consolation final to enact some revenge on the Montana club.
