CALLER 1: I’m just calling about your new sports top players of
the year. It says,
”
The Dispatch selects top performers in each sanctioned sport
offered at Gilroy High School,
”
and I’m informing you that you’re missing a pretty big aspect of
the sporting community. You’re missing the cheerleaders. So there’s
my beef.
GREEN PHONE: Caller 1, you’re not alone…

CALLER 1: I’m just calling about your new sports top players of the year. It says, “The Dispatch selects top performers in each sanctioned sport offered at Gilroy High School,” and I’m informing you that you’re missing a pretty big aspect of the sporting community. You’re missing the cheerleaders. So there’s my beef.
GREEN PHONE: Caller 1, you’re not alone…
CALLER 2: I’m really disappointed that your “Athletes of the Year” doesn’t include cheerleading because that’s a big sport at Gilroy High.
GREEN PHONE: Yikes, we’ve really struck a chord with the cheerleaders. First off, let it be known that the Green Phone and the Gilroy High community really appreciates the hard work and support of the Mustang cheerleaders. You have practice just like every other Gilroy sports team and your season lasts twice as long, through football and basketball season. This should not be overlooked. So hats off to the cheerleaders. The Phone is sorry you felt overlooked.
CALLER 3: It’s Saturday, June 11 and I’m looking at the weekend edition of the Dispatch and my beef is that you incorrectly labeled Cortec Precision Sheetmetal as the Boys’ Minors American League champion. I know for a fact that Headstart Nursery is the champion because I am a Headstart parent so we’d appreciate the correction.
GREEN PHONE: Caller 3, we did make that correction in the following day’s paper, but we appreciate you calling to reiterate the accomplishments of the Headstart Nursery Boys’ Minors Little League team. Great job, fellas.
CALLER 4:I just had a question about the Jeff Garcia football clinic. It says in the paper it’s on Sunday, but it also says it’s on Friday. I was just wondering what was happening there. Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: Caller 4, that was our mistake. The clinic starts today, Friday, not Sunday like the headline mistakenly announced in Thursday’s “On Other Fields” section. We’re very sorry about the confusion. But wait, our next caller is here to fill you in on the details …
CALLER 5: I want to remind all the local kids from 9-14 that this Friday, June 24 is Jeff Garcia’s Fundamentals of Football Clinic. He’s bringing down some 49ers and it’s going to be at Gilroy High School’s practice field. The registration starts at 8am. The clinic will go from 9am to 1pm with a barbecue after. The cost is $10 and that’s going to include the clinic, a t-shirt and the barbecue. There will also be a special section on sportsmanship and what is a hold, what is a clip put on by college referees in the area. If you have any questions, call 666-4787.
GREEN PHONE: GP hopes some kids (or their parents) who didn’t know about the clinic woke up and read the Dispatch sports section really early this morning and are planning to be at the clinic.
CALLER 6: The beef is there’s a lot of coverage of some of the club teams around and the 13-and-under Gilroy Xtreme boys’ baseball team has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the past three months. They have either won or come in the top three of each of their last 15 tournaments and they’re going to Colorado to play Nationals in a couple of weeks. It would be nice to have a little something about them.
GREEN PHONE: No. 1 in the nation for three months is quite impressive. These little sluggers sure do deserve some pub. We’ll be sure to include a story on the Gilroy Xtreme in the sports section in the near future. In the meantime, keep up the good work, gang!
