Gilroy – South County residents can hear the latest legislative proposals for health-care reform directly from their sponsors at 7pm tonight in the Gilroy High School theater. Speakers include Sumi Sousa, who works for Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez; David Panush, health care consultant for state Sen. Don Perata; Ana Matosantos, the Governor’s deputy legislative secretary for health; and Mia Orr, aide to state Sen. Sheila Kuehl.
Will these four proposals, now on the table in Sacramento, adequately address the needs? The public program is sponsored by Gilroy Teachers’ Association, Gilroy and Morgan Hill branches of AAUW and the Gilroy Library.

Free Film Series for Adults Concludes
Gilroy – Adults ages 55 and older can participate in the final free class/film series through the Gavilan College Department of Noncredit Instruction. The background and history of the film and its performance will be compared and contrasted. The final film, “The Usual Suspects,” plays from 2 to 5pm today at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse on Wednesday afternoons from 2 to 5pm, now through June 6. Students may register in class, or may call in advance to 848-4859.
Laird to Receive Honorary Degree
Gilroy – The Gavilan College Board of Trustees voted to award an honorary degree from Gavilan College to Assemblymember John Laird, in recognition of his efforts in legislation that had a direct positive and long-lasting impact on Gavilan College’s ability to improve its educational programs for its communities.
First elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2004 and 2006, Laird represents the 27th State Assembly District, which includes portions of Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Clara Counties, including the northern communities of the Gavilan Joint Community College District.
Prior to being elected to the Assembly, Laird served two terms on the Santa Cruz City Council, two terms as mayor, and eight years as a Cabrillo College Trustee.
Register Now for Gavilan College
Gilroy – Students can now register for summer and fall classes at Gavilan College. Summer session starts on June 18, but some classes start as early as June 4. This year Fall Semester begins on Sept. 4.
Students can register in person at our Gilroy, Morgan Hill or Hollister sites, by telephone or and online.
Gavilan College offers day, night and weekend classes, as well as online classes, and classes that meet once per week. The complete schedule of classes is now available online at www.gavilan.edu.

Fight Cancer at Relay For Life
Gilroy – Sign up or join a team for the June 23 to 24 Relay For Life at Christmas Hill Park.
Cancer survivors may also sign up, join a team or register online and participate in the Survivor Lap at 10am June 23, followed by a luncheon.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to bring together those in the community who have been touched by cancer. The event celebrates survivors and raises money to help the American Cancer Society. Its mission is to save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer and empower individuals to fight back. During the nationwide event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
