Sagor, Suniga lead local gymnasts in opener
SANTA CRUZ – The Morgan Hill Gymnastics team hauled in four first-place awards in its opening meet Sept. 7 in Santa Cruz.
Ten-year-old Amanda Suniga – the only returning tumbler on the squad – took first with her floor exercise, scoring a meet-high 8.650. She also placed eighth on beam, sixth on bars and tied for 12th on vault for a sixth-place finish in the Level 5 all-around for ages 9-10.
Teammate Melina Sagor, 10, placed 10th in the all-around – finishing seventh on beam, ninth on vault, 14th on bars and 15th on floor.
At Level 4 competition for 9-10 year olds, Alex Saquella, 9, won the all-around with a 34.5 total – placing first on vault (9.20) and floor (8.60) as well as fourth on beam and fifth on bars. Ten-year-old Emelie Hertz was tied for fifth in the all-around – finishing fourth on bars, fifth on floor, seventh on beam and 13th on vault. Teammate Danielle Risner, 9, took 10th in the all-around – placing seventh on bars, 12th on beam, 11th on floor (tie), and 14th on vault (tie). In addition, nine-year old Jaime Webb was 19th in the all-around – taking 11th on both beam and vault (tie).
In the 11-and-over age division at Level 4, 12-year-old Jaclyn Dixon finished second in the all-around with third-place marks on floor, beam and vault as well as second on bars.
For ages 6-7 at Level 4, six-year-old Samantha Laird finished 11th in the all-around – placing fifth on beam (tie), eighth on floor and 13th on vault. In the same class, teammate Caroline Seifert, 7, was 14th in the all-around – finishing ninth on floor (tie), 14th on beam and 17th on vault.
Eight-year-old Level 4 tumblers Jordan Fedalizo and Alexis DeHaven also fared well. Fedalizo took ninth in the all-around – placing third on beam and fourth on both vault (tie) and floor. DeHaven placed 13th in the all-around – finishing in a tie for 10th on both vault and beam as well as tied for 12th on floor.
