Police arrested a homeless man Monday morning after a woman woke up and noticed him masturbating in her backyard, according to police.

Upon his arrest, Leopoldo Olvera, 32, readily admitted to masturbating to the unsuspecting women outside other Gilroy homes and around Las Animas Park. He said as much after five police officers surrounded the 7500 block of Princevalle Street about 7:15 a.m. Monday morning and easily detained Olvera, who stuck out during dawn hours, Sgt. Wes Stanford said.

After the victim identified Olvera, police charged him with prowling and peeping and indecent exposure, both misdemeanors unless a suspect has priors. Stanford declined to comment on Olvera’s criminal history.

As for the other sexual aggravations Olvera admitted to, Stanford said police could not legally charge him based on statements without evidence, but he said the department was glad to nab a man with an admitted past.

“Our concern is that he admitted to doing this in other areas,” Stanford said, adding that it was unclear how long Olvera, who told police he sleeps at the Armory, has been committing such crimes.

Stanford urged anyone who thinks they may have been victimized by Olvera to call Gilroy Police at 846-0350, and he encouraged residents to mind their surroundings, especially during early morning hours.

“Be aware of your surroundings. If you see people in your neighborhood in the early morning who don’t belong there, give us a call,” Stanford said.
