Campos medals to best field with 42, but GHS girls golf defeated
by MVC at home
GILROY – Despite sophomore Kristen Campos’ second straight medal round and match-low of 42, the Lady Mustang golf team was low-balled on its home course – falling to a hot Monte Vista Christian line-up, 192-201.
“MVC went low today. That score of 192 was one of the lowest team scores shot here in a while,” head coach Eric Kuwada said. “We shot 201, which bested our 210 at the tournament at the beginning of the season. Even that wasnt enough. I give MVC credit. They came here and played well.”
The top thee MVC golfers all dipped below 50, as Taylor Welty shot a team-low 43 followed by Hillary Wetly with a 48 and Erika Bardo with a 49.
“Some of their girls had personal bests and did it on the sandy greens here at Gilroy GC,” Kuwada said.
The Lady Mustangs were not too shabby, either.
Senior Heather Petersono shot an impressive 51and junior teammate Carissa Filice finished at 53. Junior Amy Kishimura and senior Andrea Hugo both finished with 55s, while senior Brittney Weber rounded out the Gilroy line-up with a 57.
“Some of the Gilroy girls didn’t play as well as they would like, and that’s good, so we can use this experience and try to improve,” Kuwada said. “However, (assistant coach) Barbara Wind looked over the stats from last year and some of girls have improved their scores by an average of 20 strokes.”
It took the best of MVC to steal a ‘W’ in Gilroy – which follows up Thursday’s match against Santa Catalina at Del Monte GC with a return home against Stevenson on Tuesday.
“We are playing well, and our record shows that. But today, MVC played better and that’s OK, because that happens in golf,” Kuwada said. ” We just have to look ahead to Santa Catalina and do our best.”
