basketball team is doing very well, but you haven’t covered them. I
see you have the Gilroy High varsity basketball team in there, but
Anchorpoint is never covered in your paper.
CALLER 1: Hello, I noticed that the Anchorpoint Christian high school basketball team is doing very well, but you haven’t covered them. I see you have the Gilroy High varsity basketball team in there, but Anchorpoint is never covered in your paper. I was just wondering if you don’t cover them because they are a small Christian school or for what reason. I have been to a couple of their games, and they have a really good team. They are playing some good competition. From what I understand, they just won back-to-back league championships. I asked the coach why they weren’t in the paper, and he said the Gilroy Dispatch just never covers this team. I was just wondering why you don’t cover the other high school.
GREEN PHONE: Here it is, the call coming at the end of the season. If you recall during last year during baseball season we covered the Anchorpoint team frequently. We made contact with the basketball coach at the start of the season and told him we were interested in covering the team and needed his help. He assured us that he would call us and let us know how the team did. No scores were posted online, so we couldn’t follow the team. Also, that was the last we heard from him. We wondered if he was still alive. With the many fall and winter sports going on in Gilroy, we can’t track down every one of them. We would love to cover other teams such as Anchorpoint, but we need your help. Coaches from any team are welcome to call us or e-mail their results.
CALLER 2: Thank you for all the great stories covering the sports program at Gilroy High School. I’m a big basketball fan, so I love reading all the articles regarding the basketball games. One thing I noticed, you have not covered very much on the Freshman girls basketball team. I know that they are only freshmen, but they also have the best record out of all the basketball teams in Gilroy High. These girls are our future varsity players. Please give them some recognition.
GREEN PHONE: This is an ongoing issue in every season. Yes, we are aware of the freshman girls’ basketball team and its record. Newspapers have to make decisions of what to cover and how much play to give it. And the Dispatch feels that the time for the sub-varsity team members will come. Not sure whether you’ve noticed, we get in freshman scores from almost every game on the bottom of our varsity stories. Also, we run a JV roundup weekly that includes the freshman team.
CALLER 3: I have a suggestion. With the sports teams doing so well at Gilroy High, I am wondering if it’s not possible for the Dispatch to make a habit of posting upcoming games and schedules for the different sports. It would be really great. It’s great to read a story about their success. It’s also nice to know when and where the next the team is. Right now it’s hit and miss. Sometimes it will say tonight’s game but it might not say where or what time or might not say when the next game is at all. I think it would be appreciated by a lot of people in town who are interested in attending these sporting events but don’t know when and where they are happening.
