Katherine Hussey got open. Katherine Hussey delivered.

It was as simple as that for the Gilroy girls’ basketball team Thursday night.

Hussey lit up San Mateo High for a career-high 25 points in the Mustangs’ 66-55 victory on the second day of the Burlingame Tournament.

“Kat really had the hot hand,” GHS head coach Kari Williams said. “She took some great shots … and she made them.

“She had a great game offensively and defensively.”

Playing at small forward for much of the night, Hussey said she simply made a few changes with her shooting form.

“I actually squared up and followed through on my shot today,” the junior said. “I hadn’t had very good shot selection this year. Sometimes I just kind of threw it up there. Today I took better, open shots.”

It seemed to be the theme of the night for the Mustangs, who trailed at the end of the first quarter and first half, but turned it on in the third quarter.

“Running the offense, my teammates did a very good job,” Hussey said. “We passed, passed, passed until we got open shots.”

Helping Hussey hit some of those open shots were senior center Amanda Link (15 pts) and junior point guard Kristen Campos (10 pts).

The Mustangs (6-3) even turned it around at the free-throw line – hitting 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.

“We’re just taking caring of business right now,” Williams said.

Gilroy faces Gunn High at 4 this afternoon for the consolation championship.
