I Know Frank LaCorte, and That Ain’t Him
CALLER 1: I loved your article on Frank LaCorte (“The Natural,” July 28, 2007), but noticed one of the pictures of the pitcher wasn’t him. You can tell by his face and because the player is pitching left-handed while some of the others are right-handed.
GREEN PHONE: Wow, with eyesight like that, this reader should be Green Phone’s editor. Unfortunately, a mistake was made in using this picture. But let it be known, The Dispatch is not the only party at fault. It turns out that the card in question actually was a picture of Randy Niemann, even though it said Frank LaCorte on the front of the card. There were 606 total Donruss baseball cards in the 1981 set, and it was littered with error cards. According to his Wikipedia.com page, Niemann “has been the pitching coach for the Norfolk Tides since 2005.” And according to his stats on baseballreference.com, he couldn’t carry LaCorte’s jock. Sorry for the mistake, Frank.
I’m Mad as Hell, and I’m Not Gonna’ Take It Anymore!
CALLER 2: Yeah, I’m not calling to report a score, but it sure as hell would be nice for you to put the frickin’ baseball standings in the newspaper every now and then. And when the football season is on, the same thing – the football standings. I was wondering why. I’m thinking I’m just going to cancel my subscription. I know there’s other people in town that are thinking the same way. Your local sports coverage is great, but your national sports coverage sucks. So you might want to think of that some time, or every now and then, just the baseball scores with the schedule for MLB. Later, thanks.
GREEN PHONE: Oh, gentle reader, you really know how to cut us to the core. Let us start by saying you are absolutely correct, our local sports coverage is great. But before you go canceling your subscription because of our national sports coverage, allow us to detail some exciting new developments at The Dispatch. The newspaper will be undergoing a redesign in the coming months that will give the sports section more pages and, as a result, readers will have more local and national stories to read. We will also include enough schedules and standings to make your head explode. Your call raised a good point, though, which is the sports section should always strive to be better than it was the day before. We will make adjustments starting now so that you don’t need to go to that four-
letter word of a news organization known as the worldwide leader in sports.
