The following organizations and individuals deserve Christmas
spirit CHEERS this week:
CHEERS:For Jacqui Merriman, the coordinator at St. Joseph’s Family Center in Gilroy for the last eight years. Her dynamic traits – a kind heart, a hospitable nature and an energetic work ethic – made her the perfect host for people who are hungry, without food in for their children and distressed by difficult circumstances. Merriman found a way to help, and it came with a warm smile. She’s retiring due to a rare immune disorder which she will no doubt battle with the same good spirit that made her such a welcome staple at our community’s food pantry. Our prayers, thoughts and gratitude are with her. She exemplifies the best of Gilroy Christmas spirit year-round.
CHEERS:For the choir singers at Gilroy High School and especially choir director Phil Robb. Year in and year out, the GHS choir programs deliver outstanding performances given by disciplined students who are enjoying learning, practicing and performing. It’s a truly outstanding program that represents the best of Gilroy Christmas spirit. The cheers should be extended to all those who teach and support the various music programs in our town. Folks like Howard Miyata, Creighton Yip and Tom Brozene do a wonderful job with our children. There’s Lori Franke and the violin academy at Antonio del Buono School, too. All of this enriches and helps to define our community.
CHEERS:For all those who work with the youth in our community. From active youth groups associated with churches to the city’s youth commission to all the coaches in recreation and school athletic leagues to those at our youth centers, these are the people who ensure that there are plenty of good choices for Gilroy youth. These efforts build community, and that is the foundation for making sure good things happen with our young people.
CHEERS:For everyone who bought a present, delivered a tree, sent a check to a charity, dropped change in a Salvation Army bucket, volunteered to cook or wrap or otherwise help out people in need this holiday season. It all counts. It’s a busy world, so don’t forget to seize an opportunity to lend a hand when you can, and keep that Gilroy Christmas spirit alive year round.
CHEERS: For the organizations that help make Gilroy a great place to live. The Rotary Club, The Gilroy Chamber, the Gilroy Foundation, the Hispanic Chamber, the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women, Exchange Club, parent booster clubs … the list is long, and the benefits are many.
CHEERS: For all those serving our country in the military this holiday season, and for their families who await their safe return. May comfort, joy and peace find a way into your gatherings. All those who packed Christmas kits for the soldiers are a testament to the good wishes, thoughts and prayers for your sons and daughters.
