JEERS for appointed Santa Clara Valley Water District Board
member Cy Mann, who bought himself a brand new 64-gigabyte iPad

JEERS for County Registrar of Voters. Here in Silicon Valley, the cradle of technology and innovation, it takes forever to count the ballots. Literally weeks go by before the results are known. That’s the case in the race for District One Santa Clara County Supervisor. Second place to determine whether Teresa Alvarado or Forrest Williams will run-off against Mike Wasserman this November remains undetermined. There has to be a better way, and we suggest the Santa Clara County Grand Jury, soon to be seated, look into the entire process and file a report.
JEERS for appointed Santa Clara Valley Water District Board member Cy Mann, who bought himself a brand new 64-gigabyte iPad costing around $800 on the tax- and ratepayers nickel. As the water district spouts off about tight budgets and the need to raise rates, Director Cy Mann is busy “justifying” his need to immediately buy the latest technology with our money. That’s just the type of brass-faucet politician we don’t need at the water district.
CHEERS for this weekend’s Gilroy Relay for Life event at Christmas Hill Park to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Chair Rosie Altamirano is hoping the event breaks the $150k barrier. One of the most moving facets to the 24-hour event, which begins Friday at 6 p.m., is when the luminaria candles, which are placed in bags with inspiring messages in honor of loved ones, line the field and the bagpipes play during the silent walk. Stop by before 9:30, buy a luminaria and make a donation.
CHEERS for firefighters, host Clos La Chance and the other participating area wineries for the fund-raising chili cook-off event slated for Sunday, June 27. Proceeds benefit the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, CAL FIRE’s designated charity. Wine tasting, live music and prizes are on the agenda. Tickets are $25 and Clos La Chance is hosting to again thank the firefighters who held off the scary Hummingbird Fire in 2008 which burned right down to the edge of the vineyard.
